St Katharines Dock

Trading at St Katharine's Dock began in the 10th century when King Edgar donated 13 acres of land to 13 knights with the right to use it for profit.

In later years, the land passed through many hands, received royal patronage. In Elizabethan times the area became known as St Katharine's Dock.

By the 13th century a community was thriving together with associated facilities including alms houses.

By tjhe 18th century, St katharine's Dock was a thriving centre for trade with many ships entering London via its gateway.

In the early 19th century, Thomas Telford applied his vision of an east Dock and West Dock connected to the river Thames with an entrance lock.

During the same period, an architect called Philip Hardwick designed warehouses built directly on the quayside to improve efficiency and security. Even as these reached completion, doubts were raised as to whether the capacity would be sufficient to cope. St Katharine's Dock began to lose business to nearby rival dockyards with better transport connections and greater capacity.
